It’s the advice I always give my son Francesco when we go climbing together.

Put like that, it sounds like a disarming platitude, almost a joke. In fact, it is: I “stole” this line from the movie “The Golden Child”.

But, once you look past the irony, it’s the best advice I can give him.

On the climbing wall, just like in life and in business, the primary goal is only one: don’t fall.

The Power of the Obvious

We look for sophisticated strategies, high-sounding technical terms, and overly complex solutions for every problem, often neglecting the fundamentals.

“Stay on the floor” means:

  • Focus on the basics: If you don’t master the fundamental footholds, the most advanced technique won’t save you.
  • Risk management: Before attempting an acrobatic leap, make sure you are secure.
  • Essentiality: Stripping a problem of everything superfluous to get to the heart of the matter.

Simplicity ≠ Ease

We often undervalue simple advice because we confuse it with “easy” advice.

It isn’t easy at all.

Staying anchored to your principles and solid foundations when the pressure rises requires fierce discipline.
